I know some of you may have been turned off by the overly-hyperbolic posts about CISPA making the rounds; but the above is legit. If you haven’t signed the petition yet, please do. It needs about 25,000 signatures by next week.
Be aware that you will need to create an account with whitehouse.gov, which is a bit of a nuisance, but once you have it, it’s very easy to sign future petitions—petitions which actually have a chance of going somewhere.This is a CISPA post I am actually comfortable reblogging.
I’m not going to lie, the ridiculous and over-the-top hyperbole of some of the other posts that have been going around make me just as upset as this actual law - if we’re ever going to have a chance at maintaining a free and open society (on and offline), we can’t get there by fearmongering, period.
But this absolutely IS a bad bill, that well oversteps the bounds defined in the US constitution. It should be opposed, for the reasons outlined above. Not because “OMG THE GUBMINT OF MURICA IS GONNA SHUT DOWN TUMBLARG”.
It’s a big deal, and should be treated as such. We need to keep passing the word out. Just remember to stay sane, clear and reasoned as you explain to people why!
